WHAT IS OET?
The Occupational English Test (OET) is an English language proficiency test specifically designed for healthcare professionals. It assesses the language skills of healthcare professionals who seek to register and practice in an English-speaking healthcare environment. OET evaluates candidates’ abilities in listening, reading, writing, and speaking, with tasks and scenarios that are relevant to various healthcare professions.
OET consists of four sub-tests:
1. *Listening*: Candidates listen to recorded healthcare-related scenarios and answer questions to assess their listening comprehension skills.
2. *Reading*: Candidates read and answer questions on texts related to healthcare, such as patient case notes, medical articles, or healthcare policies.
3. *Writing*: Candidates are required to write a letter or report based on a healthcare-related task. This task assesses their ability to communicate effectively in written English within a professional healthcare context.
4. *Speaking*: Candidates engage in a simulated healthcare consultation with a trained interlocutor. This part of the test evaluates their ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues in a healthcare setting.
OET scores are reported on a scale from A to E, with A being the highest level of proficiency and E being the lowest. Many healthcare regulatory bodies, employers, and educational institutions in English-speaking countries recognize OET scores for registration, employment, and study purposes.
OET is administered by Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment Pty Ltd (CBLA), a collaboration between Cambridge Assessment English and Box Hill Institute. It is recognized by healthcare organizations and authorities in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, and Dubai.
